HORRIFIED

A Dubbo neighbourhood has been left angry and fearful for the safety of its children and grandchildren after a large number of uncapped syringes were found there at the weekend.

Several Jubilee Street residents were shocked and disturbed to learn that more than 200 syringes had been found in their street.

Some residents saw the syringes for themselves while walking along the street.

The presence of children and grandchildren in the street made the discovery particularly alarming for the residents.

The residents reported their street was usually a good place to live, and this was an extraordinary occurrence.

With her eight grandchildren frequently visiting her Jubilee Street home, Helena Davis was “quite upset and very concerned” about the syringes.

“I’m horrified to think it was so close to home,” she said.

Ms Davis has lived there for 26 years.

“I don’t know what’s happening in South Dubbo, normally there’s no trouble,” she said.

The demolition of three adjacent houses made it a less watched area, she said.

There was no certainty this was the final time, it could happen again, she said.

Pam Neely had been out the front of her Jubilee Street house until 1am, when nothing had happened, but she awoke the next morning to find syringe wrappers out the front of her house about 8am.

“I didn’t like it, I had my grandkids home from Sydney,” she said.

Aged 10 and 12, they would not have hesitated to pick them up, she said.

It was a shock and her first thought was that someone had “knocked over” a chemist, Ms Neely said.

“I lived here for 40 years and it’s a great neighbourhood,” she said.

Cheryl Kelly encountered the syringes, “scattered” along the distance of a number of houses, while on a walk with her two children, aged 12 and 9.

“I was pretty cranky, really upset,” she said.

“I don’t know where they came from, but I don’t like it.

Ms Kelly said she had a big fear of syringes and always checked at parks to make sure the area was safe.

“If I hadn’t been there, my young fellow’s curiosity may have got the better of him,” she said.

“You do everything to keep your kids safe and then a fool does something like that.”
