A Dubbo taxi driver who was threatened by his attackers with “HIV-filled’’ syringes and robbed of a large amount of cash has spoken of his “anger’’ and “shock’’ at being attacked.
Dave Bradford, 39, said two men armed with syringes jumped in his taxi about 11pm on Friday and threatened to jab him with “HIV-filled syringes’’ if he didn’t hand over cash.
Mr Bradford, who has only been a taxi driver in Dubbo for 10 months, said he “ran cool’’ and gave them “everything they asked for’’.
It’s unknown how much money was taken but Mr Bradford said it was a “substantial amount.”
“I’m still dazed by the attack. I’m, angry, stunned and shocked,” Mr Bradford said.
“It’s a high-risk being a cab driver, like being a policeman, but it’s just not right,” he said.
Police are investigating the incident and have carried out a forensic test on the taxi. They have urged anyone with information to come forward.
Yesterday local cab drivers told the Daily Liberal they were “surprised’’ to hear the news of the attack and said they haven’t seen much of that kind of behaviour lately.
One driver - who did not wish to be named - described the attack as “definitely low’’.
Dubbo Radio Cab secretary Malcolm Bryan praised Mr Bradford for his quick thinking efforts.
“He handed over the money and did the right thing. He followed the correct procedures and thankfully he is okay,” Mr Bryan said.
Mr Bryan believes the attackers knew what they were doing and may have been wearing “hooded jumpers’’.
“All I know is that it was planned, this wasn’t a spur of the moment thing,” he said.
“Unfortunately it’s the taxi industry that bears the brunt of this all the time.
“Cab driving is a mobile workplace and people don’t realise that, how would you like someone coming into your workplace and threatening you.
“It’s unnecessary but it’s just one of those things,” he said.
Mr Bradford returned to work on Saturday - a day after the incident - and eluded that his misfortune couldn’t come a worse time.
A month ago Mr Bradfords’s home was broken into and thousands of dollars worth of goods stolen.
“I got home one night after a shift and my house was done over,” Mr Bradford said.
“My big-screen TV was taken, a DVD player and sound amplifiers.
“People just do it because they can get away with it, police do their best but the magistrate lets them off scot free,” he said.
Anyone with information should call Dubbo police on 68813299.
