 Etcell’s men far too good

Etcell’s men far too good

13/10/2008 10:10:00 AM
South Dubbo, the ‘silvertails’ of Dubbo cricket - started the new RSL Whitney Cup first grade season with a convincing win over Macquarie on Saturday indicating they could be the side to end the three-season winning run by RSL Colts.

Macquarie failed to fire chasing Souths’ total of 193 but were all out for 109.

In the other games, at No.1 Oval Rugby exposed some weaknesses in the new-look Colts side winning by 10 runs; and Newtown’s new captain Wayne Dunlop got his side off to a flier with an easy win over CYMS at No.3 Oval.

But all eyes were on Souths who have recruited well during the off season.

They signed all-rounders Tim Berry and Nathan Finlay from Newtown and enticed Greg Rummans back onto the field after a two-season break.

They also have Jarrod Simpson still to come back, and probably John Colwell.

Souths skipper Aaron Etcell said things fell into place

nicely against Macquarie although the batting still needs some work.

“Although we got a good total of 193, we were out a couple of overs short of our 45 and there’s little excuse for that,” he said.

“You also look at the scoreboard and find that five batsmen got starts but no one really went on with it, which was a bit of a shame.

“Still it’s only early days and I think we can improve on that.

“As far as the bowling went, I think we did pretty well although they were 3-86 at the 23-overs drink break with Jason Green still there, and he’s always a worry.

“But when Nathan Finlay removed him and then got out Skins (Shane Skinner) in the same over, they struggled.

“Like us they didn’t see out their overs and in these one day games you have to do that.”

Souths stalwart Rodney Morrison was the mainstay of the batting seeing out 26 overs for his 43.

As well, Etcell (31), and twenties from Berry, Finlay and young Jacob Barnes lifted the scoring.

Star of the Blues bowling attack was Jeremy Dickson who bowled a great line and

length all afternoon to finish with 5-21 from eight overs, while Skinner chipped in with 3-40 from 8.3.

At 2-19 from eight overs Macquarie were in trouble but then Jason Green smashed 48 from 15 scoring shots to get them going again before he played over the top of a Nathan Finlay delivery.

Finlay was most successful of the Souths bowlers taking 3-17 from seven overs.
