Dunn to compete on world stage

9/07/2008 11:45:00 AM
Dubbo cyclist Megan Dunn has recovered after fainting during a training session in South Africa in the lead up to the World Junior Cycle Championships starting this Saturday.

The 18-year-old suffered a dizzy spell during a session last week, but says it was only the effects of her 24-hour plane fight and lack of sleep.

“I don’t travel well and I think it was a combination of the flight and jetlag,” Dunn said.

“I had a really strong training session on Monday so I am feeling much better,” she said.

Dunn arrived in Cape Town last Tuesday after spending two weeks at a training camp in Adelaide.

She said arriving two weeks before the start of the championships on Saturday will serve both her and team-mates well.

“The coaches and managers planned for us to arrive two weeks before the start of the competition so we have time to acclimatise and prepare,” she said.

Dunn’s coach, Garry Dawson, said the young cyclist is in good form leading up to this Saturday.

“Megan has her 10km scratch race on Saturday and her pet event, the 20km point score, later on in the week,” Dawson said.

“This is her first time competing in the under-19s division but she had a really good session on Monday and I think she will be hard to beat,” he said.

Dawson said the cement track at Cape Town would be an advantage for Dunn, who has done a lot of training on the asphalt track at No.1 Oval, Victoria Park.

This is Dunn’s first time competing overseas, but with three national titles and the 2007 Bay Series win under her belt she and Dawson remained confident.

“I have done all the hard work for the past four months leading up to the championships, now I am just focusing on all the small things like sleeping and eating right,” Dunn said.

“All I can do now is hope for the best.”

In January Dunn reached the peak of her career when she took out the Bay Series in Melbourne, beating hundreds of senior riders to the title.

“Megan’s Bay Series win was extraordinary,” Dawson said.

“She is in a really good position for the world champs and she is looking good,” he said.
