Anglers reel in monster cod

21/05/2008 10:21:00 AM
With winter well and truly rolling into town at the weekend stories of trophy Murray Cod flowed into Dubbo catches.

Rick Pitt produced some amazing photos of a huge 60 pound-plus ‘dinosaur’ caught on a yabby at Tilpa, and rumour has it an even bigger fish was caught by an unknown angler in the same area that went 70 pounds-plus.

It’s great to see these

big fish getting about in numbers with the catch

and release mentality starting to work in everyone’s favour.

Rick picks up a selection of Jaz spinnerbaits and hard-bodied lures for his efforts.

Paul Swain caught a sensational 53cm golden perch in the Macquarie River with his mate Chris Vandermaal recently.

The fish found an Australian crafted 50mm invader in the Wagga Wagga frog pattern irresistible, and slammed the lure just a few metres into a late afternoon troll close to Dubbo.

Paul wins this week’s DVD entitled Murray Cod Tactics.

Thanks also to Marky Rich for dropping into Explore Outdoors with some great snaps of some stud Burrendong goldens.

Rob Paxovanus and Rod ‘The Cod’ McKenzie brought us a highly entertaining episode of Fishing Australia on Saturday afternoon, with huge Murray Cod seemingly the flavour of the month as recreational fishing makes a strong push to become Australia’s favourite sport.

A total of 156 keen and enthusiastic anglers turned up in Brewarrina and 175 came along to the Outback Carp Muster in Bourke recently.

Unfortunately a cold snap had the carp a bit quiet, with the biggest caught weighing in at 4.5kg.

The good news was that plenty of golden perch were also caught and released, and the catties were about at Brewarrina as well.

The October school holidays will feature the next round of the Carp Muster at both Bourke and Brewarrina, so if you can make it there will once again be some top prizes on offer.

Wyangala Dam has reported plenty of yellas being caught, and cod about the 60cm mark also making their presence known.

One young angler was particularly happy, trolling up his first cod measuring 62cm.

The trout have been quiet, but silver perch are doing well and are being caught in good numbers.

Rain has fired the Eucumbene and Thredbo rivers up and turned the resident fish on. Spawn run fish are moving upstream also, with Wulf’s, Klinkhamers and Adams’ working for the dry fly fishermen and women.

The Gwydir is fishing really well with anglers using surface poppers catching up to 20 cod in a session.

Surface poppers resembling a small mouse have been proven to work well for anglers north of us, so we might have to adopt the tactic ourselves with a mouse plague in full swing near Geurie and Wongarbon.

Thanks again to Richard Pinkee for his contribution to the column.

Trout have been providing plenty of sport for locals in the McDonald River with brood stock introduced some time ago laying the foundation of a healthy trout population.

Celta’s and Rebel Craw Fish have seen Dean at Tamworh Tackle set a new personal best for trout, with a 600mm Rainbow buck coming to the net.

Jarrod Godson from Reel Screamin’ Barra Fishing described the fishing in the Northern Territory as “in frenzy and only getting better”.

The billabongs are now hosting barramundi pushing the metre mark, and they are holding in about two metres of water, where the temperature is still more than 25 degrees celsius.

With the run-off slowing, the water flowing over the barrage at Shady Camp has subsided and at high tide Shady is experiencing a reverse run-off effect with salt water pumping into the fresh and creating a wall-like colour change curtain.

Saratoga and Tarpon are really starting to come on the chew, with stacks of Jewies also being caught in and around the harbour.
