Big truck mayhem

1/10/2008 11:52:00 AM
SPEEDWAY: Monster truck mayhem will open the Dubbo City Speedway Club’s 2008-09 season this Sunday evening, October 5.

Spectators had a taste of the awesome power of ‘Sampson’ at the Stroke Supercross Championships back in March, so the club invited owner/driver, Sam Xuereb back to launch their 08-09 season.

According to operations manager Darren Anning, the club had spent every free moment over the

past 12 months upgrading the venue to enable it to bring a

wider variety of motor sport to Dubbo.

“On seeing the improvements at Morris Park, you can definitely envisage the potential for great events in the future,” Anning said. “The spectator area now surrounds the whole speedway track which has a very spacious infield for events like this Sunday evening. Crowds will have a wonderful vantage point with the new banked area.

“There is now a huge new safety catch fence which will give the venue a triple-A rating allowing speedway enthusiasts to view V8 Sprint cars in action, and there is a larger car parking area.”

Anning said the club had given local sporting and volunteer groups the opportunity to benefit from Sunday evening’s event by inviting the PCYC Junior League Club to operate catering vans to assist them with their fundraising efforts.

“We know how hard it is to get the funds needed to do these things,” he said.

This Sunday will see ‘Sampson’ and ‘Tropical Thunder’ as well as an army tank and a two-wheeling Jeep jump and crush cars and a caravan.

There will also be freestyle extreme motocross with riders attempting crazy stunts on their bikes, as well as a Demolition Derby and a fantastic fireworks display.

“Long weekends are about spending time with the family and it’s great to have events like this that everyone can enjoy,” Anning said. “Dads like big thumping engines, mums and littlies like fireworks, teens like freestyle MX and everyone would like to smash something sometimes.

“So we’ve thought of the whole family for this long weekend.”

Gates open at 1pm with the action starting at 4pm. Tickets are $25 adults (16 years and over), $15 children (15 years and under) and $70 family (two adults, two children).

What time was the fireworks display???!! We anxiously waited until about 9.15pm with two tired little one's and just they couldn't wait any longer! We all went home to bed a little muddy, very weary, $75 down and didn't even get to see a "fire cracker"! Disappointed.
