Local players dominate

VETERANS GOLF: Local players Grahame Marchant, Colin Yates and Zel Turrell have dominated the leaderboard in the Western Districts Championships, which ended day three at Dubbo yesterday.

The major event was played over 36-holes on Wednesday and yesterday with more than 200 men and ladies on the course each day

Marchant, off 15 handicap, had two great stableford rounds of 43 and 39 for 82 overall to win by seven points from Derek Norris (75), second on a countback.

The Western Districts Champion of Championships event proved to be a winner for Colin Yates who has been playing consistent golf for some time. Off 21 handicap, he opened with 40 points in the first round and closed with 34 yesterday.

Congratulations also to Zel Turrell who along with husband Brian travel regularly to veterans golf events all over the State.

She had rounds of 40-38 (78) off 31 handicap and was a deserved winner by four points from yet another Dubbo player Tina Beggs (32-42 74).

Overall winner Grahame Marchant said last night he was delighted with the way he played, with consistency the key.

“Probably the reason I played so well was that I had a week up the Gold Coast with a group of fellows last week and played six days, so things became a big automatic,” he said.

“This week I’ve played early each time and with the conditions the way they were it suited my game.

“I started well on Wednesday with 23 points on the 19-27 layout and came home in 20 (on holes 1-9) with three straight pars for three pointers on the last holes which made a big difference.

“Then today on the 1 to 18 course I didn’t start quite as well with 16 points but had 23 on the second nine.

“I also putted quite well both days and of course.”

Marchant, now in retirement as the former financial manager of Dubbo City Council, has been a valued member of the Dubbo Golf Club for a long time and now enjoys the opportunity to spend as much time as possible on the course.

Among the other trophy winners after the 36-hole event was wrapped yesterday were:

Division 1 men: Max Hassan (Dubbo) 75 c/b; Division 2: David Parr (Hurstville) 75 c/b; Division3: Keith McRae (Camden Haven) 74.

Ladies, Division 1: Patricia Lumley (Coffs Harbour) 73; Division 2: Margaret Shay (Antill Park) 77; Division 3: Pam McRae (Camden Haven) 69.

Western Districts Veterans Golf Association president Barry Harvey and his executive last night hosted a presentation dinner at the clubhouse where the major trophies were presented.

Association secretary John Dixon said last night the weather had been kind, although Tuesday’s appointed day was washed out, but transferred to the rest day on Wednesday.

“We’re very happy with the way it’s all worked out,” he said.

“Reports from the locals and visitors has been very encouraging to the organisers with the course in great condition after the rain we’ve had during the past fortnight.

“I think the great scores are a reflection on the quality of the course from tees to greens.”

The tournament will wrap up today with a medley 4BBB stableford and a nine-hole event as well.
