Visitors Max Bignell from Charlestown and Bev Bransdon (Wollongong) combined for a card of 49 stableford points to win the last event in the Western Districts Veterans Week of Golf.
The 4BBB stableford medley event on Friday featured a strong field to finish a great four days of competition, interrupted only by a washed out day on Tuesday which fortunately was able to be held over until the next day.
Although they didn’t play together, Bignell (19 handicap) and Bransdon (20) finished as one of the cards and were able to beat local pairing Diane Hewitt and Hela Bryan by a point.
Other good scores came from Garry Martin and Barry Newport (46); Derek Norris and Ray Moulds (45); Alan and Bev Bransdon (45); Barry and Eileen Harvey (45); Jill Dunstan and Bill Stratford (45); Mary Hewitt and Doreen Dewar (Camden) with 44, the same score as Jenny and Ross Goodwin from Ballina.
The Week of Golf major trophies proved to be a triumph for local players with Grahame Marchant having 82 points in the 36-hole stableford event to be the overall winner; while Zel Turrell (78) was best of the ladies.
As well, Colin Yates (74) was Western Districts Champion of Champions winner.
The other major aspect of the week was the wonderful trophies made possible by the sponsors - Dubbo City Toyota, Central West Golf Centre, Dubbo Visitors Centre, Dubbo RSL Club, Dubbo City Council, Orana Wool Scrap Metal, Brennan’s Mitre-10, Geoff Richards and Fairplay, Tony Espert Upholstery, Mainstay, Myer, Orana Credit Union, West Dubbo Bowling Club, Horizons Lifestyle Living at Delroy Park and Lloyd Walker Insurance Brokers.
Meanwhile, Saturday was a return to regular Dubbo veterans golf with 36 players in the stableford event. On this occasion Wayne Holland had the winning score of a magnificent 24 points from his eight handicap.
On a day when good scores were at a premium, Holland won by one from Les Fuller and Kim Grattan (23) with Reg Warren next with 21.
The ball competition went down to 20 points with the other winners being the 20 group comprising Gerry Dawson, Allan Coffee, John Cole, Randall Richardson, Colin Parkes, Winston Granger and Max Keating.
