Young guns shoot to top with Vardon wins

Two rising Dubbo golfing superstars, Patrick Wilson and Matt Gleeson have taken out prestigious Vardon events.

Gleeson was successful at Tuggerah Lakes Open with a two-under-par score and Wilson claimed the Killara Cup with three under.

Both were over the moon about their performances.

“It was the first Vardon event I have won, so I was really pleased to have gone so well,” Gleeson said.

It was also the first for Wilson, who plans to move to Sydney later this year to further his golfing career.

Gleeson moved to Sydney earlier this year for golf and so far the 18-year-old has been making a name for himself on the course.

Earlier this year he became the youngest member of the NSW Colts golf team and made history when he and his father David became the only father and son team to take out the Dubbo’s Foursomes Championships two years in a row.

The Killara Cup was Wilson’s first major win since returning home from Canada only a few months ago.

He said he wasn’t expecting to go so well, but was pleased with how he performed.

“I was pretty happy with how I went, I won by four strokes which I was pretty pleased about.”

Both Wilson and Gleeson are now preparing for the Parkes Open this weekend, and both are feeling confident.

“I won the open two years ago so hopefully I can play well and take it out again,” Wilson said.

Gleeson said he is happy with how he has been playing recently and said he is feeling confident he can perform well this weekend.

Gleeson has been backed as one of the favourites for the Parkes Open this weekend.
