‘Generous’ victory has city start in sight

Generous Huka will be steered towards a Canterbury race next start following his win in the Rating 77 Handicap over 1700 metres at Wellington yesterday.

Owned by Dubbo racing personality Tim Moses in partnership with trainer Cindy Monaghan, the six-year-old gelding was ridden brilliantly by Greg Ryan.

In the seven-horse field, there were a few chances in the latter stages with Frenchman’s Gap looking the winner until Generous Huka continued his forward run.

Ryan got everything out of his mount and ran down Frenchmans Gap ($11.00, Michael McDuff)) to win by a half head as the $2.40 favourite.

Adrian Robinson’s mount, Sports City at $3.40 ran a good race for third.

Moses said he was hoping for more success with Generous Huka.

“He’s been a real steal for us,” Moses said.

“The owner was going overseas and we picked him up for just $650, but he’s now won five races from 20 starts and more than $30,000 in prize money.

“His mother (Huka) won four Listed races so on that score alone he’s had something going for him.

“But it hasn’t all been easy. As a two-year-old he had a habit of running through fences but Nick Nettle nursed him back to good health on his place outside Dubbo, but because of those early experiences he’s been a hard horse to train and a couple of preparations had to be abandoned.”

Greg Ryan had his first ride on Generous Huka and was impressed with what he saw.

“I think we all agree he will be ever better over more ground so we will probably step him up to a 1900 metres race Canterbury early next month,” Moses said.

“Down the track I see him being a very good cups horses for around here.”
