HARNESS RACING: Dubbo trainer Mick Lew has high hopes for a winning week following the success of Jogalong Kimo at Dubbo on Wednesday night.
Then on Saturday his focus turns to the big Parkes TAB meeting when stable star Jogalong Joel contests the $8000 Westoil Parkes Gold Cup.
At Wednesday’s TAB meeting at Dubbo, Lew said it was “about time” that Jogalong Kimo started to show the potential he thinks she has.
After all she is a half-sister to the mighty Karloo Mick and Jogalong Joel, from the mare Miss Jogalong.
Winning the State Bred Bonus Three-Year-Old Pace with Kurt Lew in the sulky, was hopefully a turn of fortune for the filly that now boasts two wins and five placings from 15 starts.
“I was real happy with the run, but its about time she started to get to the line,” Mick Lew said.
“She’s certainly got some ability on her breeding but it’s been a while coming, mainly because of her own doing.
“She’s got some really bad manners and as a result we’ve had to contend with a heap of outside draws that hasn’t helped her.
“I think though that we’re starting to get her sorted out.”
Starting second favourite at $3.50 behind the Bernie Hewitt trained Chanel Shanon ($3), Jogalong Kimo was driven superbly by Kurt Lew from barrier three and won by a neck from the John Lew trained Smart Ranji ($3.50, John O’Shea) with Panorama Ice ($5, Matt Rue) 2-1/2 metres away third. Chanel Shannon was sixth.
Jogalong Kimo’s win gave Mick Lew bragging rights over his brother John with the result reversed from the last Dubbo meeting when King Ranji got up over Jogalong Kimo by a neck.
The Mick Lew stable now heads to Parkes Saturday night for the Westoil Parkes Gold Cup over 2430 metres with Jogalong Joel having drawn barrier five in a cracker of a field.
“It’s a great field at Parkes and we’ll have to be at our best to pull it off,” Mick Lew confessed.
“He trialled here (at Dubbo) Tuesday night and pulled very badly but I’m hopeful that won’t happen Saturday night.
“From the five barrier we’ll have to go forward as you can’t afford to take a back seat with these good horses.”
Jogalong Joel, the winner of 18 races and 13 placings from 36 starts is coming off minor placings at Bathurst, Harold Park and Forbes in the past six weeks.
He raced fiercely when beaten a head by Go Go Bop as the $1.70 favourite last start at Forbes on Anzac Day.
