Muswellbrook trainer Mack Griffith was always confident Sutton Manor could win the feature $10,000 Kings Hall Jewellers Silver Goblet Handicap (1025m) yesterday and the two-year-old filly didn’t let him down.
The Beautiful Crown (USA) x Cashell youngster was ridden on the pace by stable jockey Leanne Henry and when it mattered most in the final stages easily held off the $2.40 favourite Sin Sin Sin by 1-1/4 lengths. Nothin’ Leica Dame ($6.00, Mark Lister) was 2.25 lengths away third.
Sutton Manor went into the race overdue for a win having run a third and a second in her first preparation at the start of the year before two seconds again at Muswellbrook in the past month.
“She was due for a win but her placings were against quality opposition and I was always confident she would break through today,” Griffith said.
“The track was only slow but that suited her and she has had experience on this type of surface.
“She likes to race off the speed and despite the wide barrier (14) got the run of the race and came home nicely.”
After the race Leanne Henry also illustrated the confidence in her mount.
“My horse got out good, settled nicely and came into the race before we got her over into the better going in the straight and she did it nicely,” Henry said.
“She was just too good.”
Chiamaka beat Sutton Manor at Muswellbrook on June 24 and has since run two seconds at Canterbury meetings.
Wellington Boot winner Sin Sin Sin was resuming yesterday after a lengthy spell and while her second was a good run she was never going to threaten the winner.
Sin Sin Sin’s jockey, Michael Travers, said: “It was a good, honest run but the winner had too much fitness on my filly.
“She will be improved by the run, but today wasn’t quite ready.”
On a track rated slow, Sutton Manor ran the race in 58.35 seconds, which was the best time from the four races decided over this distance yesterday.
King Rex won the open handicap in 58.49s, which again illustrated the quality of Sutton Manor’s run.
