Apex Oval better choice for grand final

22/07/2008 10:10:00 AM
Nice day at the rugby on Saturday for the local derby clash between the Roos and Rhinos.

The sun was shining, the Roos crowd particularly was in a good mood considering they won all four grades, the quality of the first grade feature game was excellent, the temporary stands and clubhouse were full to overflowing.

But are the facilities at No.1 Oval good enough for a big crowd on grand final day, if the Roos qualify to host it?

Come grand final day on Saturday September 6, hopefully the Roos will be playing someone, providing they can win the major semi-final set down for August 23 and in turn get the nod to host the big one again.

My betting is that things won’t change but there are also plenty of others who are saying “let’s take the grand final to Apex Oval”.

The grandstand up there is the best in the west, there are adequate food and drink facilities, the scoreboard can be seen from anywhere around the oval and security can be easily monitored.

Sadly No.1 Oval is not good enough for a grand final and an anticipated big crowd.

The facilities are very ordinary for food and drink stalls, and patrons deserve better than sitting on temporary stands, on the bike track or standing about on the sideline.

For the younger ones that might be all right, but we can do better - and that means using the best facilities - at Apex Oval.

The Roos and Rhinos go head-to-head at No.1 Oval in Central West rugby on Saturday. Is the Victoria Park facility suitable for a grand final crowd? You be the judge. Have your say: sport.liberal@ruralpress.com
