Wind, rain little worry

Westside Panthers have now joined Orange Waratahs at the top of the Western Premier League competition ladder after a convincing 6-2 win over Orana Spurs on Sunday.

Wind and rain wasn’t enough to distract the Panthers from victory, with strikers Leo Fernandez and Evan Goodstat taking two goals each, polished off by two more from Anthony Wahbi and Martin Raines.

The Panthers dominated in the first half, leading 2-0 at the break.

Westside captain Alan Auld said the half-time score did not reflect his side’s performance, with Panthers missing many opportunities.

Auld said the wind had died down in the second half and the heavens opened, leaving no advantage for either side.

“We played well in the second and it was only a lapse in concentration towards the end of the match that saw the spurs creep in two goals,” Auld said.

“There wasn’t any real stand out players, we all contributed to the win and we used our speed well,” he said.

The Panthers will meet their top of the table rivals, Waratahs, in two weeks time, but Auld said his side will be taking one match at a time and for now their focus is on their game against the Bulls at home this Sunday.

“Bulls will be a danger game,” Auld said.

“On their day they have the ability to score a lot of points.

“We will have to be ready and on our game,” he said.

Auld said his side’s concentration would be their key focus at training this week.

he said his side will have to be switched on for the full 90 minutes in their next four encounters to ensure they place well for the finals.

Auld said Bull’s player Nelson Flick will take full advantage of his side if they lapse in concentration this weekend.

“One of the disappointing things about the result on Sunday was that we let a couple of soft goals in,” Auld said.

“At the moment in for and against we have scored a lot of points but we have also had quite a few scored against us.

“If we lapse for just four or five minutes against the Bulls we could easily get points scored against us.”

In other matches Westside Panthers U18s got up over Orana Spurs with a convincing 4-2 win, while in second division Orana Spurs taught Westside a lesson taking the match by three points, 4-1.

Auld said his side would meet tonight for training to prepare for their match against the Bulls on Sunday.

Their match against Waratahs will also be at home and Auld believes that will be a slight advantage for his side.
